Breast Implant Problems

Some breast plastic surgery patients who have had breast implant problems have said the breast implants are cold, hard and feel like two heavy melons on their chests. Some women have complained  that they have had a difficult time sleeping with them. Athletic women have found breast implants restrictive when participating in sports.

Another woman, a nurse,  told us she had encountered numerous health problems over the 17 years she had her silicone breast implants.  They also were quite restrictive and cold and hard all the time. She had contractures that developed fairly soon after the initial surgery and ruptures developed along the way causing leaks or leaching.  Her health improved somewhat after the removal of the breast implants but she developed breast cancer and felt she has some long term health effects from the ruptures and exposure to the silicone shell and the many other chemicals that are involved in the implant itself.

One woman reported she developed an allergy to the silicone shell of the breast implant.

Many women have told us they have had to go back in for breast implant revision or breast cancer repair fairly soon after the surgery. Some reported overt lopsidedness in one breast.

Breast Implant Ruptures

Unfortunately rupture in the breast implant is not always something the breast implant patient is aware of in the beginning anyway. MRI's used to be the way to get an idea if there might be a rupture in the breast implant and if they could see the leaking or leaching  which may not show up on the MRI but undoubtedly occurs.

Breast Implant Support Groups

In the early 90s there were a number of breast implant support groups - for both saline and silicone gel breast implants - around the United States. In one group the young women were comparing their crippled fingers from arthritis. Most had fibromyalgia.  These were not typical health problems for women who were so young. Some young women had been diagnosed with breast cancer.  One woman had developed a lump on her wrist.  When they did a biopsy it was discovered that it was a silicone deposit.

We have heard many stories like this. Also in the early 90s, plastic surgeons were telling prospective patients that the silicone was on one continuous string and cold not in any way migrate out of the shell.  this was later proved to be wrong. The plastic surgeons may have been given that information by pharmaceutical reps or drug reps. information. There have been many breast implant problems reported to us.
